In 2016, the British Council helped to set up a group of Saudi Arabian female artists, aiming to support aspiring female curators and arts administrators from Saudi Arabia. The arts group known as Contemporary Collective will hold their first exhibition entitled ‘We Are Not Alone’ at Athr Gallery in Al Faisaliyah, a skyscraper in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah.

As well as works from the collective, the exhibit features 27 artworks never before seen in Saudi Arabia from artists including Rachel Whiteread,  Yinka Shonibare, Ryan Gander and David Shrigley.

The British Council initiated the project in May 2016, providing collective members with visits to the Liverpool Biennial, Tate Britain and Tate Modern, Palace of Westminster and Hannah Barry’s Bold Tendencies. They also spent a week studying a course in arts management.

The collective comprises of artists Solafa Rawas, Reem AlJalhami, Dalia Fatani, Maryam Bilal and Thahab Alosaimi and intends on highlighting the similarities between people by underlining the connection between Saudi Arabia and the UK.

It also touches on anxiety and fear of the unknown. The exhibition will run until November 16th. To find out more, click here.
