Does my movie news make you horny? Randy? Does my movie news round-up make you horny baby, yeah?
Why am I adopting this swinging, Austin Powers-style tone to introduce the news this week? Why don’t you hop like a bunny to the next paragraph to find out…?
FROM PLAYING CARD TO PLAYBOY
Having played a difficult hand as the Joker in Suicide Squad, Jared Leto is going on to portray the late Hugh Hefner in a forthcoming biopic.
While the Playboy founder has only just passed away, it isn’t a cash-in on the controversial purveyor of erotica. Director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) was a friend and has been planning to make the movie for years. Indeed he had Robert Downey Jr. in the frame to play the decadent mogul a decade ago. It seems the time is right to bring Hefner’s story to the screen.
The move is sure to delight and annoy in equal measure, as well as boost Leto’s profile no end following his work as the Clown Prince of Crime and the villain of Blade Runner 2049, Niander Wallace.
HEDGING THEIR BETS
Video game to movie conversions tend to be tricky affairs. Even today the art of making a successful film from the genre is fraught with more peril than a booby trap-laden tomb. Studio execs have high hopes for Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, but the disappointments of Super Mario Brothers and most recently Assassin’s Creed are plain for all to see.
Now Paramount Pictures and Deadpool/new Terminator helmer Tim Miller have joined forces to adapt console-based classic Sonic The Hedgehog for the multiplex. Those with long memories will remember their adventures with the spiky blue hero on the Sega Mega Drive. However the character has endured and is about to receive a new lease of life.
Is this a film people are crying out for? I wouldn’t have thought so. But it’s hoped this critter will succeed where Italian plumbers have failed.
BON VOYAGE KATE
The sequel to Avatar has just started production. No, it’s true! Yes I know you’ll probably be dead by the time it’s released, but great news that it’s finally happening right? There isn’t just one but four of the things coming your way between 2020 and 2025. Let’s hope maestro James Cameron has a hell of a story up his sleeve!
Known for his mammoth movie endeavours, Cameron is also great when it comes to casting. Sigourney Weaver reunited with him from Aliens for the first film and he’s planning to revive another working relationship alongside Kate Winslet: she’s just joined the franchise as a character called Ronal. The role will probably be light years away from the part of Rose in Titanic. Here’s hoping this trip will run a lot smoother than the last one!
It’s a busy time for the actress. Not only is she headed to the future but she’s going back to the past in…
WOODY’S WHEEL DEAL
The trailer for Woody Allen‘s latest Wonder Wheel has arrived. Starring Winslet as Ginny, a stifled woman in 1950s Coney Island, the plot involves her interest in a handsome lifeguard Mickey (Justin Timberlake) and the tensions that creates with husband Humpty (a resurgent Jim Belushi) and his daughter Carolina (Juno Temple)…
Wonder Wheel starts turning in December.
BACK TO THE FUTURE(S)
Finally, Blade Runner 2049 has been released this week. To sighs of relief across the movie buff spectrum it’s been getting great reviews and shows a belated sequel isn’t always a terrible move. With that in mind I wrote a feature about other sci-fi properties that could be revived this way. You can read it here.
And I’m spent! I’ll be back with more movie news next week…
